Contemporary museum architecture

The original ‘Luigi Pecci museum of contemporary art’ in Prato (Italy) was opened in 1988. It is situated in the lights of the ancient culture of Florence. It is one of the few modern art museums in Italy and has an extensive art collection. To grow further and become a permanent art center, the museum wanted an extension to double the exhibition space.

The Dutch firm ‘Nio Architects’ designed this extension that embraces the existing building like an outer ring that suits the artistic past of Tuscany. To create this rounded shape the architect chose lightweight aluminium standing seam cladding. The mechanical character of the existing building is empowered with an AluNatur Gold Brushed finish of the extension. In this way, the contemporary art is surrounded by contemporary architecture.
